Alice Stewardson, Quantity Surveyor at Danaher & Walsh, has had her University research paper published by an eminent industry publication, the Journal of Financial Management of Property and Construction.

Alice joined Danaher & Walsh in 2016 as a trainee and combined her work here at Danaher & Walsh with her studies at Birmingham City University, where she was a consistently high achiever.

As part of her degree, Alice submitted a paper for her Individual Honours Project (a sustained, in-depth and research-informed project) as the final part of her studies.

The paper is titled THE LATE PAYMENT EPIDEMIC IN UK CONSTRUCTION.

It focuses on the late payment epidemic that persists within the construction industry and specifically analyses the effectiveness of government-led voluntary payment initiatives.

Alice gathered information from one-hundred construction professionals and carried out a comparative analysis of upstream (main contractor) and downstream (subcontractors/suppliers) experiences.

The resulting paper was so highly regarded by Alice’s tutor, the esteemed Professor David J Edwards, that the document was submitted for publication.

“I am honoured and delighted to have had my work published. I am hugely grateful to Birmingham City University and Danaher & Walsh for the opportunities they continue to give me. Late payment continues to be a huge issue in UK construction, and I hope by having my research published and raising awareness, I am playing a small part in helping to find a solution for this problem.” Alice Stewardson.

Ian Gilbert, Commercial Director at Danaher & Walsh commented on the news: “We are all very proud of Alice and her continuing achievements and are delighted to have been able to support her throughout her journey”.

The work is published today, 14 February 2023.

“To win a Considerate Constructors Leading Light award means a great deal. To win the overall award is fantastic. This is a national award and we are a local contractor. We know our standards are high, but to have this recognised by such a well-respected body as Considerate Constructors is very special. We are very proud indeed.”
