Main construction works have now started at Kirk Hill in East Bridgford, marking a significant new phase of the A614/A6097 improvement scheme. Danaher & Walsh’s team has moved onto the junction to deliver the Kirk Hill junction works, which will continue for approximately 12 months.
The works began on Monday 24th August and follow an extensive period of preparation, representing the next stage of the wider A614/A6097 corridor improvements.
What Do the Works Involve?
The first phase at Kirk Hill will focus on earthworks, utility diversions and the removal of existing traffic islands, lighting columns and traffic signals. These works will clear the site and prepare the junction for its redevelopment.
Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road will be closed to traffic from Monday 24 August for approximately 12 months. A temporary speed restriction is also in place on the A6097 through the junction.
Drivers travelling to and from East Bridgford should follow the signed diversion route via Fosse Way, Butt Lane and Main Street. Trent Lane and Brunt’s Lane remain closed throughout the works and do not form part of the diversion route, so drivers should not attempt to use these roads when accessing the village.
Keeping the Community Connected
Danaher & Walsh recognises that a scheme of this scale can have a direct impact on residents, businesses and commuters. Keeping people informed and maintaining safe, reliable routes around the works remain key priorities.
When delivering schemes like this, traffic management measures are put in place to help keep both our site teams and road users safe. Temporary road closures, speed restrictions and other traffic management measures are an important part of maintaining a safe network while construction is taking place.
The closure also affects local bus services. The Rushcliffe Villager service will no longer serve Shelford and Gunthorpe while Kirk Hill remains closed.
To help maintain local connections, additional journeys will operate on the 747 Nottsbus Connect service. These services will allow passengers in Shelford and Gunthorpe to continue travelling to Radcliffe on Trent, Bingham and Nottingham. In East Bridgford, the Rushcliffe Villager will continue to serve the village using the diversion route, with buses turning around via Holloway Close. To support safe bus access, parking restrictions will apply on Holloway Close 24 hours a day throughout the works. Existing parking bays on Holloway Close will remain unaffected.
Residents can also sign up to the scheme’s WhatsApp channel for real-time updates on the A614/A6097 works as they progress. Join the A614/A6097 WhatsApp channel

In 2026, Danaher & Walsh achieved carbon reduction certification for the eleventh consecutive year, following receipt of the Achilles CarbonReduce 10 Year Award in 2025. The milestone confirms that Danaher & Walsh has measured and managed its greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with ISO 14064 Part 1 2018 for eleven consecutive years. Achilles Carbon Reduce, powered by Toitū Envirocare, carried out the audit.
Eleven Years of Carbon Reduction Certification
The certification follows the latest annual audit of Danaher & Walsh’s emissions inventory against ISO 14064 Part 3 2019. The audit confirmed that Danaher & Walsh continues to meet the requirements of the Carbon Reduce programme.
Since the baseline period of 2013 to 2016, Danaher & Walsh has reduced its emissions intensity, carbon usage normalised against turnover, by 31.15%, based on the programme’s five-year rolling average methodology.
Why This Matters
For clients across the highways, infrastructure, bridgeworks and public realm sectors, this carbon reduction certification provides independently assured evidence that Danaher & Walsh manages its environmental impact responsibly, supporting procurement decisions on frameworks that increasingly require sustainability credentials.
Communities across Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and further afield also benefit, as sustained carbon reduction lowers the environmental footprint of local infrastructure delivery. Employees, meanwhile, see the achievement reflected in a culture of environmental accountability that runs through everyday working practices, from toolbox talks and SEATS training to site-level monitoring, underpinned by the company’s Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality Policy.
The result also reinforces Danaher & Walsh’s standing within the civil engineering industry, where verified, long-term carbon reporting is becoming an important marker of credibility for SME contractors operating alongside larger organisations.
Looking Ahead
Danaher & Walsh’s current target is to achieve net zero by 2035 in its own operations and by 2045 across all scope categories, a roadmap set out in its Commitment to Net Zero. Planned initiatives include reducing the use of diesel in heavy plant on hire, prioritising low-emission tools and equipment through procurement, and installing solar panels at its Head Office to reduce reliance on grid electricity.
This year’s audit also recommended Danaher & Walsh for Platinum status certification, reflecting the strength of its carbon management practices.
Achieving eleven years of carbon reduction certification is a significant milestone for any organisation.

Via has appointed Danaher & Walsh as main contractor for the Kirk Hill junction redevelopment in East Bridgford. The junction is one of five forming part of the wider A614/A6097 major road scheme. The contract is worth £5.367 million. Danaher & Walsh expects to complete the work before the end of 2027.
Part of a Wider Road Improvement Scheme
The Kirk Hill junction redevelopment forms one strand of a much larger programme along the A614/A6097 corridor. Across the scheme, five junctions are being upgraded. The improvements aim to cut journey times, ease congestion and make the route safer for all users, from commuters and hauliers to cyclists and pedestrians.
Archaeology Surveys Mark the Start of Works
Archaeology surveys on land off East Bridgford Road marked the start of work. Crews will build the site compound next. Main construction then begins in August.
Scheme Launch Marked by Regional Leaders
Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, and Councillor Mick Barton, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, visited the site on 29 July 2026. The visit marked the official launch of the scheme.
Claire Ward said: “I know how much the A614/A6097 scheme matters to the people and businesses who rely on this route every day, whether they are navigating busy junctions such as Ollerton roundabout or travelling along the wider corridor.”
Scope of the Kirk Hill Junction Works
The redevelopment itself is substantial. Danaher & Walsh will add an extra lane in each direction on the A6097. This will increase capacity and cut journey times. The team will also widen right-turn lanes into Kirk Hill and East Bridgford Road, with new road markings for safer turning.
The works also include a new traffic signal system and upgraded street lighting. Crews will renew footpaths along Kirk Hill and improve the bridleway crossing for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.
Councillor Mick Barton said: “This is a huge milestone, not only for the A614/A6097 scheme, but for Nottinghamshire as a whole. Anyone who has driven through this junction will recognise that improvements are needed, and once works are complete, a new lane in each direction will help traffic to flow more smoothly.”
A Long-Standing Collaboration with Via
Dan Danaher, Managing Director of Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering, said: “Danaher & Walsh are delighted to be commencing work on the Kirk Hill project. We’ve been collaborating with Via on an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) basis for the last 2 years, so seeing everyone’s hard work come to fruition is a really exciting moment for us. We look forward to working on this project and keeping disruption to the local community as minimal as possible. As an SME based in the East Midlands ourselves, we’ll also be looking at how we can add value to the community through our Engineered for Good social value commitment.”

Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering is proud to celebrate the success of Watkin Road Bridge, which has won the ProCon Leicestershire 2025 Infrastructure Project of the Year award.
The award was presented on 13 November 2025. It recognises the quality, technical capability and collaborative approach shown throughout the Watkin Road Bridge Replacement Scheme.
This achievement marks a proud moment for everyone involved in the project.
Supporting Leicester’s Regeneration
The bridge serves Freemens Meadow, one of Leicester’s key regeneration areas.
The area includes around 600 homes and a growing local business community. Therefore, reliable access is essential for residents, businesses and future development.
The former timber and steel bridge had reached the end of its design life. As a result, the area needed a modern replacement that could support long-term growth.
Delivering a Complex Bridge Replacement Scheme
Danaher & Walsh delivered the full bridge replacement scheme.
The works included two new 40-metre bridges, the demolition of the existing structure and upgraded junction works at Watkin Road and Upperton Road.
The project also improved pedestrian and cycle connections. These improvements now support safer and more accessible movement through the area.
Maintaining Access Throughout Construction
One of the project’s biggest achievements was maintaining access to Freemens Meadow throughout construction.
This required detailed planning, careful sequencing and close coordination with key stakeholders. The team worked closely with Leicester City Council’s Traffic Control team and Leicester City Football Club.
This coordination was especially important during matchdays and peak travel periods.
Despite the scale and complexity of the scheme, the team completed the works without significant disruption to residents, businesses or local road users.
Built on Collaboration
The project team worked with a shared ethos of “one team, one outcome”.
This approach brought all partners together behind a clear goal. It also supported strong communication, disciplined programme control and effective decision-making.
Barratt David Wilson Homes, BWB Consulting, Bentley Project Management and Leicester City Council all played an important role in the project’s success.
Together, the team created a collaborative working environment that has since been recognised as a benchmark for future urban infrastructure schemes.
Celebrating the Award
Reflecting on the award, Danaher & Walsh said:
“We are truly honoured to receive this ProCon Infrastructure award for our work on Watkin Road Bridge.
“This project was a landmark moment for our team. We delivered it on behalf of our client, Barratt David Wilson Homes, and worked closely with Leicester City Council throughout.
“The success of this scheme was built on strong partnerships. We would like to thank BWB for their engineering expertise, Bentley Project Management for their cost consultancy support, and Leicester City Council for their constructive engagement.
“From day one, the project team shared a clear goal. We wanted to create an infrastructure asset that improves connectivity and supports future growth for the local community.
“That spirit of collaboration continued through every stage of delivery. It is this shared commitment that we are proud to celebrate.
“Thank you again for this recognition. The result is a finished project of which we are all very proud.”
A Project That Leaves a Lasting Legacy
The completed bridge now provides a modern, resilient and future-ready asset for Leicester.
It improves connectivity for residents and businesses. It also enhances safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition, the scheme supports the continued growth of the Freemens Meadow community.
