Social Value Case Study
Danaher & Walsh has committed to Social Value, which we call ‘Engineered for Good’. We focus on the ten areas we believe we can make the biggest and best impact in the communities in which we work.
This case study is an example of our commitment to inspiring the next generation and how it was achieved.
Inspiring the next Generation at Haileybury School
As part of our ongoing social value programme, we were delighted to attend a recent careers event at Haileybury Turnford School. Representing the business was Pat Cummings, who spent the afternoon engaging with students and discussing career opportunities in the construction and civil engineering sectors.
The event provided a valuable platform to talk with students about the diverse roles available within our industry, from site operatives to project managers, engineers to quantity surveyors. The level of interest from the students was impressive, with many asking thoughtful questions about the career paths and qualifications required to enter the profession.
Pat was able to share insights on:
- The wide range of civil engineering disciplines
- The types of projects Danaher & Walsh deliver, including highways, bridges and public realm schemes
- The vital role construction plays in local communities by building and maintaining essential infrastructure
Emphasising Sustainability and Social Impact
This blended learning approach has allowed the student to bridge the classroom. A key focus of the discussions was around sustainability and the positive environmental impact the construction industry can have when properly understood. Pat was able to challenge some of the misconceptions around construction and highlight how:
- Our landscaping projects often include biodiversity enhancements
- We prioritise sustainable materials wherever possible
- Civil engineering can support both social and environmental outcomes
The session sparked thoughtful debate about how the industry is evolving and how young people can be part of that change.
A Lasting Impression
Reflecting on the day, Pat commented:
“I was very pleased to attend, and hopefully, some of the students may now follow a career path into our industry.”
By taking part in these events, Danaher & Walsh continues to invest in the next generation of professionals and raise awareness of the critical role civil engineering plays in shaping a better, more resilient future.
