Social Value Case Study
Danaher & Walsh is committed to Social Value, which we call ‘Engineered for Good’. We focus on the ten areas we believe we can make the biggest and best impact in the communities in which we work.
This case study exemplifies our commitment to enhancing communities.
Supporting Community Wellbeing Through Civil Engineering
At Danaher & Walsh, we don’t just deliver large-scale infrastructure; we also take pride in supporting community projects that create real social value. A recent project at Appleby Cottage showcases how small-scale improvements can make a big difference.
Scope of Works
Our work at Appleby Cottage included:
Creating a 13m x 10m hard-standing area in the goat paddock by excavating, laying Teram, and stoning up to form a durable, accessible surface.
- Stockpiling soil within the paddock to create a feature mound for enrichment, giving the goats more space to climb and explore.
- Cutting down and resetting a septic tank lid to finished ground level for safety.
- Completing multiple gutter repairs, including new brackets and seals.
Delivering Accessibility and Social Value
The most significant impact of this project was the creation of a clean, mud-free paddock area, enabling clients using walking aids to access the goats year-round alongside their peers. This has greatly enhanced the inclusivity of Appleby Cottage’s animal-assisted therapy sessions.

Client Feedback
Sarah from Appleby Cottage shared:
“We are really pleased with the hard-standing area that has been provided by Danaher & Walsh Group Ltd. Not only does it look really smart, but it also enables our clients who use walking aids to access the goats in the winter months alongside their able-bodied colleagues.
Our goats are an important part of the animal therapy we offer at Appleby Cottage. They are funny, cheeky and love human company, making them great livestock to teach our clients about trust, confidence and kindness. Thank you, Danaher & Walsh Group Ltd, from the clients and staff of Appleby Cottage CiC.” – Sarah
Why This Matters
- Improved accessibility: clients of all abilities can participate in animal therapy.
- Enhanced animal welfare: the new paddock design enriches the goats’ environment.
