Social Value Case Study
Danaher & Walsh is committed to Social Value, which we call ‘Engineered for Good’. We focus on the ten areas where we can have the biggest and best impact in the communities where we work.
This case study exemplifies our commitment to enhancing the communities.
Supporting Local Charities Through Better Infrastructure
Danaher & Walsh recently contributed to the refurbishment of the car park at The Air Ambulance Service’s Hanger Charity Superstore in Melton Mowbray.
Working in partnership with Galliford Try and their delivery partners, our team provided specialist civils support to help transform a deteriorating external space into a safer, more accessible and more functional area for the charity and its visitors. Although our formal Social Value Employer Levy (SLEV) contribution on this project was £50, our wider impact on the community and the charity’s operations was significantly greater.
Delivering Practical Improvements
Our team delivered a series of targeted improvements designed to enhance the safety, usability and long-term resilience of the car park.
Key works included:
- Resurfacing and levelling the rear car park to create a smooth and safe surface.
- Repairing potholes and reinstating damaged access areas to improve vehicle flow.
- Coordinating closely with Galliford Try, Holcim, Collins and Martin TME to ensure seamless delivery.
- Providing skilled civils expertise as an SME subcontractor, contributing high-quality workmanship across all repairs.
These improvements addressed long-standing issues on site and created a noticeably more welcoming and accessible environment for customers and volunteers.
Enhancing the Local Community
The Hanger Charity Superstore is an important asset for the Air Ambulance Service and the wider community, generating vital income that supports lifesaving missions across the region. By improving the car park infrastructure, we helped ensure that visitors can access the store safely and comfortably, supporting the charity in its ongoing operations.
The refurbished space also helps reduce the charity’s future maintenance burden, protecting limited funds and allowing more resources to be directed towards frontline service delivery. In addition, the improved environment enhances the experience for volunteers, donors and customers, strengthening the store’s role as a valued community hub.
Social Value Impact
While the SLEV attributed to Danaher & Walsh was small due to the structure of the delivery team, the social impact generated by our contribution was meaningful. The upgraded car park directly enhances safety and accessibility, supporting increased foot traffic and smoother volunteer operations. The Air Ambulance Service has already recognised the upgrade as a major improvement, commenting on its positive impact on visitors and supporters.
This project reinforces our commitment to creating value beyond the construction phase. Even on schemes where we are one part of a wider contractor group, we remain focused on delivering positive outcomes for local communities, charitable organisations and the people who depend on them.
Continuing to Engineer for Good
Our work at The Hanger demonstrates how infrastructure improvements, even at a modest scale, can deliver substantial community benefit. Beyond the enhanced site itself, the project reflects our broader purpose: using our civil engineering expertise to support the places, organisations and people that serve our region.
As we continue to work with clients, partners and charities across the Midlands, we remain committed to delivering meaningful social value and helping communities thrive.
