Social Value

Danaher & Walsh is more than a civil engineering company. We are a values-led organisation with a strong commitment to our people, clients and communities.

Founded in 1969, we have remained a family-run business for more than half a century. As a result, people and community remain at the heart of how we work.

In addition, we have formalised this commitment through our social value strategy, Engineered for Good.

Danaher & Walsh is not just a civil engineering company; it’s a values-led organisation with a deep commitment to improving the lives of our team and also the individuals and communities where we work.

Founded in 1969, we’ve been a family-run business for over half a century, and our dedication to our people and the surrounding communities is at the core of everything we do.

We have formalised our commitment to social value in our strategy: “Engineered for Good”.

Building a Lasting Legacy

On every project, we focus on building a lasting legacy. This means creating benefits during construction and after our work is complete.

To achieve this, our social value team follows a clear methodology. As a result, we can create measurable outcomes that support clients, communities and local priorities.

Our approach covers several key areas. Therefore, we can focus on what matters most to each project and community.

1. Positive Economic Impact: We work to create positive economic impact through our projects. For example, we support local businesses, SMEs and social enterprises wherever possible.

2. Inspiring the Next Generation: We inspire young people to consider careers in construction and civil engineering. In addition, we support learning through careers events, school engagement and work experience.

3. Investing in Future Talent: Our apprenticeship, trainee and graduate programmes help develop future talent. We are also proud to be a Gold member of The 5% Club. This means more than 5% of our workforce are in earn-and-learn roles.

4. Building an Inclusive Workplace: We are an Equal Opportunities employer. Therefore, we welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

5. Enhancing Communities: We work with clients and local stakeholders to identify meaningful support. This includes volunteering, donations and practical community improvements.

As a result, our social value activity focuses on the areas that matter most to local people.

6. Environmental Sustainability: We actively reduce waste on our construction sites. In addition, we look for ways to lower carbon emissions and improve environmental outcomes.

7. Local Supply Chain & Workforce: We support local people and businesses by prioritising our workforce and subcontractors who are closest to the project.

8. SMEs and social enterprises: Where possible we work with SMEs and CICs because they are instrumental to the wellbeing of our communities and our economy.

9. Supporting Local Charities: As well as our Charity of the Year which is voted for by our employees we also support local charities where we can, in line with the strategic community impact plan created at the beginning of each project.

10. Providing Opportunities to Ex-offenders: We believe in second chances.  We are very proud of our ambition to hire an ex-offender onto each of our projects.  By doing this we’re not only helping the individual but also benefiting the community and the economy.

Measuring Our Contribution

To ensure we’re making a meaningful impact, we closely monitor our progress across all projects.

Our methodology includes setting goals and regularly measuring against our targets.

The system we use to measure our impact is aligned with the Government’s Social Value Model and the TOMS Proxy Values, and enables us to stay on track in order to meet our targets and measure our success.  We create a social value scorecard for each project that we can share with our clients, our team and the local community.

Our target is always 20% SLEV – Social & Local Economic Value (of the value of the project).  Our track record since we have been measuring our impact, indicates that our current average proxy value per project is 27%.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement

We continually seek innovative ways to enhance our social value contribution, going beyond the project requirements to benefit the community. Our aim is to exceed the target of 20% social value in each project, ensuring that a diverse cross-section of the community benefits.

At Danaher & Walsh, our commitment to social value is deeply ingrained in our culture. We strive to create a positive and lasting impact on the communities in which we work, making a meaningful difference in the lives of people and the environment.

We are not just engineers; we are builders of positive change, building a better future for all.

Client Testimonial

“I would like to thank Danaher & Walsh (Civil Engineering) Ltd for the way in which they conducted themselves throughout the construction of the Cycle Network Link project for the University. We were particularly pleased with how the scheme was implemented and managed on site, and are also very happy with the end product. We couldn’t speak more highly of Danaher & Walsh.”
