Sawtry S278, Improvements Scheme, Cambridgeshire
Project Overview
Construction of a road junction/entrance to a brand new highway service. Improvements on existing roads, including road widening, a signalised junction, construction of new footpaths, road surfacing, lighting and a road sign upgrade.
A new signalised junction and dedicated turning lanes to new services beside the A1(M) in Cambridgeshire.
Outcomes
Danaher & Walsh completed the project 3 months sooner through work acceleration.
The supply chain was adaptable to deliver all work packages during a shorter programme. The successful completion of the S278 works ahead of the official opening ensured the site was fully operational in time for the launch of the new services. Upgrades to existing roads and footpaths were delivered to a high standard, improving both access and safety.
The project contributed to the local economy by creating over 100 new jobs and introduced energy-efficient facilities, including EV charging points, to support sustainable travel. Ultimately, the new services enhance safety for motorway users by providing a well-equipped space to rest, refresh, and refuel
