Podium & Cycle Store, Leicester
This project combined the revitalisation of the podium space and the entrance to the library with the provision of a brand new, secure, underground storage area for up to 300 bicycles. The striking design combines light and dark granites with modern, metal furnishings, which all blend seamlessly into the surrounding area.
Project Overview
Taking advantage of existing changes in level, the design incorporates the cycle store beneath the Podium paving and library approach.
Significantly, the design addresses the demanding access requirements and level changes without compromising the open setting or the busy approach to the library. To achieve this, augured piled retaining walls were installed as temporary works to allow the construction of the basement store, which were then incorporated into the permanent structure.
The entrance to the cycle store is set below the Podium and is accessed via steps from two directions. Wheeling channels are incorporated into the staircases to allow easy movement of cycles between levels.

The Outcome
This exciting project, which was finished on-time and on-budget, took place whilst the David Wilson Library and other adjacent buildings remained in busy use. The complexity of the job, together with these additional constraints, brought numerous engineering, logistical and management challenges.
Over 400 tonnes of pre-cut granite paving/steps/seating stones was used in the hard landscaping scheme, delivered and laid in sequence.
Danaher and Walsh’s commitment to client satisfaction was demonstrated by the results from two Considerate Contractors inspection with scores that were “an exceptionally considerate site”.
