New HV Intake Substation, University of Leicester
Danaher & Walsh was appointed by the University of Leicester to construct a new high voltage intake substation on their main campus.
Project Overview
In order to make space for the new substation, an existing embankment had to be excavated. The embankment was then stabilised using a Permacrib gravity retaining wall system.
A reinforced concrete slab and adjacent generator slab were then constructed, onto which the substation was built.
The substation itself is a reinforced concrete and blockwork structure, clad in wood and finished with a sedum living green roof.
High voltage and low voltage apparatus and switchgear was installed and commissioned by a specialist contractor.
Ducting was installed to connect the substation to an existing substation in the Adrian Building and the incoming electrical supply. The Adrian Building car park was subsequently planed and resurfaced.
Throughout the works period, traffic and pedestrian management were installed to maintain access to university buildings and facilities as required.
