Mill Lane & The Gateway, Leicester
Project Overview
The Mill Lane & The Gateway Public Realm scheme transformed a former public highway running through the heart of De Montfort University’s campus into a safe, accessible and visually striking pedestrian route.
Delivered in partnership with Leicester City Council and De Montfort University, the project sought to create an attractive public space that connects the city centre with the riverside, while complementing the wider regeneration of Leicester’s public realm. The design combines functionality, sustainability and aesthetic appeal, creating a cohesive space that enhances the character and experience of the campus environment.
Key features include rain gardens that manage surface water and support biodiversity, decorative granite bookends that guide pedestrians along the meandering route, and contemporary LED lighting that provides a welcoming atmosphere after dark. High-quality natural stone paving, durable golden gravel surfacing and coordinated street furniture echo the design language of Cathedral Square, helping to create visual continuity across the city.
All works were carefully planned and delivered within a live university environment. A phased approach was developed in close collaboration with stakeholders to minimise disruption, ensuring that essential university activities, including open days and events, could continue throughout the construction period.
Outcomes
The completed scheme has significantly enhanced the campus and the surrounding public realm. Mill Lane and The Gateway now provide a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly route that encourages movement and social interaction, while offering inviting spaces for rest and reflection.
The introduction of sustainable design elements, such as rain gardens and permeable surfaces, has helped to reduce surface water runoff and improve environmental resilience. The high-quality finishes, coordinated materials and landscaping have created a sense of place that reflects Leicester’s evolving identity as a modern, green and people-centred city.
Through strong collaboration, thoughtful design and careful execution, the project has delivered long-term benefits for both the university community and the wider public, transforming a once-ordinary thoroughfare into a landmark urban space.
