Market Deeping Services, Lincolnshire
Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering was appointed to do the S278 works, which resulted in us being asked to carry out the complex groundwork and associated requirements for the fuel station.
Project Overview
Lindum Developments appointed Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering to deliver the S278 highway works at Market Deeping, Lincolnshire. This work paved the way for a new petrol filling station development.
Our performance on the highways package led directly to a second appointment. Lindum Developments asked us to deliver the petrol filling station groundworks and associated on-site infrastructure.
The PFS works had to start immediately after the S278 scheme finished, giving the team a demanding programme from day one. The scope covered the full range of on-site infrastructure. We excavated and installed two fuel storage tanks, a wastewater treatment plant, a foul water pumping station and a petrol interceptor.
We also carried out formwork and reinforced concrete works for the canopy and shop foundations, including a power-floated raft slab. This included the forecourt and tanker bay slabs. The scope also included on-site drainage and ducting, kerbs, edgings and lighting columns.
Overcoming the Petrol Filling Station Groundworks Challenges
The petrol filling station groundworks presented some significant technical challenges. Tank installations at depths of 4.5m needed specialist cofferdam design and strong shoring.
A high water table meant we needed wellpointing and dewatering throughout excavation. Ground conditions of sand and gravel, combined with groundwater ingress at depth, made excavations difficult to keep dry.
This made it hard to pour the concrete bases. Our engineers overcame this by designing and installing a bespoke cofferdam solution, letting us complete the tank installation safely and on programme.
Throughout the project, we coordinated closely with other contractors on site. This included the teams delivering the canopy steelwork, kiosk and fit-out elements, keeping progress moving smoothly across all work fronts.
Outcomes
We completed the petrol filling station groundworks to the satisfaction of Lindum Developments. We handed over all critical on-site infrastructure, ready for the wider PFS fit-out to proceed. Our engineering solution to the challenging ground and groundwater conditions kept the tight programme on track.
Close collaboration with other trades ensured a seamless transition from groundworks through to completion. The successful delivery has further strengthened our relationship with Lindum Developments, building on the trust we established through the initial S278 works.
