Lady Bay Heritage Bridge Repair, Nottingham
Project Overview
Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering supported urgent heritage bridge repair works in Nottingham after a skip lorry struck Lady Bay Heritage Bridge.
The lorry ran through the brickwork parapet and fell approximately six metres into a storage yard on the bank of the River Trent. As a result, the incident caused an immediate road closure on a busy route in Nottingham and featured on local news.
Following the incident, VIA contacted Danaher & Walsh at short notice. Our team attended site with VIA’s structures team to assess the damage, plan the repair and support the safe reopening of the route. The works focused on repairing the damaged brickwork parapet and replacing the affected crash barrier.
Emergency Heritage Bridge Repair
Because Lady Bay Bridge is a heritage structure, the repair required a sensitive approach. Therefore, Danaher & Walsh recovered and salvaged as much of the existing brickwork as possible.
To maintain the appearance of the bridge, the team then sourced similar reclaimed bricks from a local reclamation supplier. This helped make up the shortfall while keeping the repair in line with the existing structure.
Danaher & Walsh also brought in a trusted specialist bricklayer with the skills needed for heritage masonry repair. As a result, the team could complete the brickwork parapet repair to a high standard while protecting the character of the bridge.
Safe and Efficient Delivery
The road closure affected a busy Nottingham route, so a prompt response was essential. However, the works still required careful planning, safe access and high-quality workmanship.
Danaher & Walsh worked closely with VIA’s structures team throughout the scheme. Together, the teams managed the emergency repair, restored the damaged parapet and replaced the crash barrier.
The team mobilised quickly and started works within one month of the initial contact. In total, Danaher & Walsh completed the scheme in just eight weeks, from initial contact through to handover and road reopening.
Outcome
Danaher & Walsh completed the Lady Bay Heritage Bridge repair safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
The Small Works Team received a client commendation for their prompt action and quality of workmanship. In addition, the successful delivery of the project helped generate several further enquiries and job awards.
