White Rose Park, Hellesdon, Norfolk
The Brief
Danaher & Walsh delivered highway works on Drayton High Road in Hellesdon. In turn, the works enabled Persimmon Homes East Anglia to bring forward its White Rose Park development. The site was previously home to Royal Norwich Golf Club.
Persimmon Homes East Anglia funded the scheme under a Section 278 agreement. Danaher & Walsh delivered it on behalf of Norfolk County Council. Our White Rose Park highway works formed a new, permanent entrance to the development from Drayton High Road. As a result, this gave the development direct access to one of the principal routes into Norwich.
Project Overview
Delivering the White Rose Park Highway Works
The first phase of the White Rose Park highway works added a new right-turn lane and central refuges on Drayton High Road. This gave the development safe, permanent access. The works took place on a live highway. So, our team used careful traffic management to maintain safe passage for road users. This also minimised disruption throughout construction.
The second phase widened the footway along a 600m stretch of Drayton High Road. This section runs north and south of the new site entrance. The team also installed new kerbs and resurfaced and relined the carriageway. In addition, we carried out surfacing works under a shared road closure with an adjacent resurfacing scheme on the A1067. This allowed both projects to progress efficiently and reduced the impact on the travelling public.
Throughout the scheme, Danaher & Walsh worked closely with Norfolk County Council and other stakeholders. This close collaboration kept the works progressing safely and efficiently.
Outcomes
The completed works have given White Rose Park a safe, permanent connection to Drayton High Road. This supports the delivery of new homes in Hellesdon. The widened footway has also improved pedestrian and cycle provision along this stretch of road. As a result, residents travelling between Middletons Lane and nearby amenities benefit, including those attending Hellesdon High School.
We coordinated surfacing works with the neighbouring A1067 scheme. This reduced the overall disruption to road users in the area. Overall, the scheme demonstrates Danaher & Walsh’s ability to deliver Section 278 highway works safely within a live highway environment. It balances the needs of the development, the council and the travelling public.
