Market Square, Northampton
Project Overview
Danaher & Walsh worked with Stepnell, on behalf of West Northamptonshire Council, to redevelop Market Square, Northampton. The scheme brings new life to Northampton town centre. It creates a vibrant space for shoppers, residents and visitors.
Protecting Heritage During the Market Square Northampton Redevelopment
We worked closely with the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) during excavation. Together, we located, recorded and protected buried historic features. This careful approach kept the programme and budget on track.
Local shops and businesses stayed open throughout the works. We provided 24-hour access to every property, particularly over the Christmas period. Regular contact with business owners kept everyone informed. We also carried out night works to protect daytime trade.
The scheme includes a striking water feature at Market Square, Northampton, stretching over 60 metres. It sits alongside a five-metre-deep reinforced concrete storage tank. Building this within a busy city centre required careful planning. We used ground-penetrating radar surveys, boreholes and trial holes to guide the design.
We installed advanced tree pit systems underground to help new trees reach full maturity. Dense underground services made excavation challenging. We used vacuum excavation to reduce the risk of service strikes.
