Cannock Street, Leicester
Cannock Street Leicester – Danaher & Walsh were employed through the LCC Highways Structures Framework to undertake a bridge upgrade and resurfacing, including the application of deck waterproofing and associated highway realignment.
Overview
The works included removing the carriageway surface to expose the bridge deck, structural concrete extension to the deck to strengthen the upstand (which involved the hydro-demolition of the existing RC upstand), installation of new steel parapets, application of waterproofing to the bridge deck, installation of new kerb lines and edgings to form a new carriageway alignment, and surfacing to the carriageway.
Challenges
The project had several challenges including working over and close to a watercourse, which had to be managed in terms of gaining EA permits and protection of the watercourse from environmental damage during the works; working around live services which needed to be moved during the waterproofing process; providing and maintaining a temporary pedestrian access throughout the works via the installation of a temporary scaffold walkway running over the watercourse.
Outcome
Danaher and Walsh successfully delivered the project on time, within budget and to a very high standard of workmanship, improving the carriageway in terms of safety and ride quality for the users.

What do our customers say about us?
“Leicester City Council and Danaher & Walsh have been working together under a Framework Contractor arrangement for nearly 20 years. Danaher & Walsh have been involved with delivering bridge maintenance works some of which has been on historically listed structures. Danaher & Walsh (Jason Bartlett and Alastair Walters) have also been actively involved in delivering a number of new footbridges via ECI and design and build arrangement. This work has elements of structural and bridge highway reconstruction, employing specialist surfacing materials and waterproofing systems. Often, issues have cropped up and we have found D&W have been keen to offer technical advice and solutions to overcome these issues.
D&W are also very pro-active in promoting safe working systems on site. They have developed and produced RAMs covering all site operations to comply with Health and Safety requirements. This includes managing all specialist sub-contractors.Often, they have been involved with the formal applications to other organisations/agencies e.g. Environment Agency, English Heritage, RailTrack etc to gain approvals for works prior to commencing on site.
It is hoped that the working partnership continues with Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering now and in future years.”
