Air Quality Control Project, Coventry
Project Overview
Delivering the Coventry Air Quality Control Project
Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering delivered the Coventry Air Quality Control Project for Balfour Beatty. Balfour Beatty appointed us on behalf of Coventry City Council. The scheme improved the road layout and traffic flow into Coventry city centre. It also delivered major upgrades for pedestrians, cyclists and the wider public realm.
We fully rebuilt Junction 7 of the inner ring road roundabout. As a result, the junction changed from a traditional roundabout into a dual-lane system. Major upgrade work then followed on the incoming roads and bus lane. This included rerouting traffic through an extra archway in a railway bridge. We removed the old splitter islands and built new ones as part of the full junction redesign.
Pedestrian experience sat at the heart of the scheme. We added three new cycleways to improve access into the town centre, and we also built 13 new pedestrian crossings. Throughout the works, several service diversions took place. In addition, we removed and filled two old subway systems, opening up safer, more direct routes at street level. Finally, a public realm scheme rounded off the works. It added grassed areas, resin surfacing, planting and marble-effect seating, creating a welcoming space for residents and visitors.
Outcomes
The completed Coventry Air Quality Control Project transformed traffic movement into the city centre. We used a range of traffic management equipment to keep vehicles flowing freely through the new layout. Throughout delivery, we worked closely with several nearby construction sites, covering traffic management, levels, service diversions and programming. As a result, we kept the wider Coventry Air Quality Control Project on track.
Working near a Listed Building added an extra layer of care to the project. We kept pedestrian and vehicle access to nearby shops open throughout construction. As a result, we cut disruption to local businesses and the public. Overall, the junction is now safer and more accessible, and it also supports better air quality. Everyone travelling into and around Coventry city centre benefits from the improved public realm.
