Adams Road
Project Overview
Danaher & Walsh was appointed by MGroup to carry out highway improvement works at Adams Road, Cambridge. As a result, the route is now England’s first cycle priority road.
The scheme gives cyclists priority over vehicles. It also removes on-street parking. Together, these changes create a safer, more direct route for everyday journeys.
Works ran from October 2025 to May 2026. In addition to resurfacing the full carriageway, the team installed new ducting and drainage and widened the footways. Throughout the programme, our team worked closely with MGroup to keep the scheme on track. As a result, the works delivered lasting benefits for pedestrians, cyclists, residents and local businesses.
Outcomes of the Cycle Priority Road Scheme
The completed cycle priority road has transformed Adams Road. Cyclists now get safer, more direct priority over vehicle traffic. Because on-street parking has gone, the street feels calmer for residents. At the same time, wider footways and better drainage support pedestrians and local businesses. These benefits will last well beyond the scheme’s completion.
Beyond the core highway works, the team also delivered social value. This included new fencing and planting for residents’ gardens along the route. It reflects our aim to leave a lasting benefit for the local community. Client feedback has been strong throughout the project. In fact, a positive mid-project 360-degree review confirmed the strong working relationship between Danaher & Walsh and MGroup.
