Danaher & Walsh Carries Out Lady Bay Bridge Repairs in Nottingham
Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering has been appointed by Via East Midlands to deliver urgent Lady Bay Bridge repairs in Nottingham.
The historic bridge suffered significant damage after a lorry crashed through the northern approach parapet in July.
The vehicle fell to the ground beneath the bridge, which led to an immediate closure while inspections took place.
Responding to Urgent Bridge Damage
Following the incident, Lady Bay Bridge initially closed for one week.
After a detailed engineer’s inspection, the bridge reopened with temporary traffic management in place. This allowed single-lane traffic to continue using the route while plans for repair works progressed.
As a result, disruption was reduced while the project team prepared for the urgent works.
Supporting a Key Nottingham Route
Lady Bay Bridge plays an important role in Nottingham’s road network.
The bridge forms one of only three road crossings over the River Trent in Nottingham. Therefore, restoring full access was a priority for the city.
Danaher & Walsh mobilised at short notice to carry out the repair works and help return the bridge to full use as quickly as possible.
Repairing a Historic Bridge
The works include carefully rebuilding the decorative brickwork damaged during the incident.
The team will also repair and reinstall large coping stones. In addition, a new section of vehicle restraint barrier will be installed to support road safety.
Where possible, materials will be reused. Matching materials will also be sourced to reflect the local heritage and existing style of the bridge.
Preserving Heritage and Improving Safety
Neil Clarke, Nottingham City Council Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said:
“Given the local heritage of the bridge, materials are being sourced which match the existing style. The parapet will also be rebuilt to replicate the previous design and wherever possible we’re reusing materials. This is an important route in and out of the city and following the accident we’re working really hard to get it reopened as soon as possible.”
Delivering Essential Bridge Repair Works
Danaher & Walsh is proud to support Via East Midlands with these urgent bridge repair works.
The project will help restore an important transport route, protect the bridge’s historic character and improve safety for road users.
Once complete, the works will allow Lady Bay Bridge to reopen fully with minimal downtime.
