Abbey Park Road Footbridge Lifted Into Place in Leicester

The new Abbey Park Road Footbridge in Leicester has reached a major project milestone.

Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering lifted the steel superstructure of the new pedestrian and cycle bridge into place. As a result, the project has taken a major step forward. The footbridge will provide a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists on Abbey Park Road. It will also improve access along this busy route into the city.

Supporting Leicester City Council

Leicester City Council appointed Danaher & Walsh to construct the new footbridge through the Maintenance of Highway Structures term contract.

The project forms part of a wider programme of works on Abbey Park Road. In total, Danaher & Walsh is delivering three separate schemes for Leicester City Council in this area. Together, these works will support a major improvement of the busy route.

Improving Access on Abbey Park Road Footbridge

The new footbridge sits alongside the existing Grade II listed Abbey Corner Bridge.

Danaher & Walsh is also refurbishing Abbey Corner Bridge. In addition, the team is delivering major highway improvements to Abbey Park Road. The new pedestrian and cycle bridge will provide a safe alternative to the narrow existing bridge, which dates back to 1878. As a result, cyclists and pedestrians will have a safer and more accessible route.

A Major Project Milestone

Danaher & Walsh lifted the steel superstructure into place on Saturday 9 April. The operation required careful planning, technical expertise and strong logistics. Therefore, the successful lift marked an important moment for the project team.

It also highlighted the progress being made across the wider Abbey Park Road improvement works.
