Danaher & Walsh was appointed by Leicester City Council to carry out public realm and highway works on St George Street in Leicester’s city centre.

Project Overview

Danaher & Walsh was appointed by Leicester City Council to carry out public realm and highway works on St George Street in Leicester’s city centre.

The scheme was procured as a call-off on the council’s Highway Maintenance and Construction framework following a mini-competition. The overhaul of St George Street – between its junctions with St George’s Way and Queen Street – aimed to create a more attractive and people- friendly route linking the railway station, city centre, and Cultural Quarter.

The Outcome

St George St was pedestrianised between its junctions with Queen St and the A594 (Central Ring Road), except for a short egress route for vehicles leaving the Mercury Place complex. A series of rainwater gardens were created and trees planted along the edges of the street, which will help make the area more attractive to visitors and provide better natural drainage.

A new terraced lawn area was created at the junction with St George’s Way, where an existing retaining wall was lowered to help open up the area and create a more inviting approach. The main footway was reconstructed in resin-bound gravel and weaves between the new planting, with high-quality block paving marking the entrances to Mercury Place, St George’s Churchyard and the existing children’s play area.

Project Overview

Archaeology – working closely with MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) during excavation to locate, record and preserve buried historic features while maintaining the programme and budget.

Stakeholders – Working closely with shops/businesses to provide 24-hour access to properties to minimise interruption, especially over the Christmas period. Communicate and plan frequently with business owners to ensure all parties are happy. Night work is being carried out to ensure businesses are unaffected.

Complex water feature – Constructing a significant water feature over 60m long and a 5m deep reinforced concrete water storage tank within a confined city centre space congested with services involved meticulous planning, GPR surveys, boreholes and trial holes to aid design and buildability.

Tree Pits – to ensure newly planted trees reach maturity and grow to a substantial size, state-of-the-art tree pit systems were installed underground, which presented issues when excavating. Vacuum excavation was utilised to reduce the risk of service strikes.
