Lady Bay Heritage Bridge, Nottingham

Appointed by VIA to do an emergency repair to a heritage bridge on an important route into and out of Nottingham City Centre.

Lady Bay Heritage Bridge, Nottingham

Danaher & Walsh were appointed by VIA to do an emergency repair to a heritage bridge on an important route into and out of Nottingham City Centre.

Project Overview

Lady Bay Heritage Bridge was hit by a skip lorry which ran through the brickwork parapet and fell approximately 6 metres, landing on a storage yard on the bank of the River Trent in Nottingham. This was a headline bulletin on the local news station (Central News) as it caused an immediate road closure on a very busy route in Nottingham.

VIA called Danaher & Walsh to visit the site at short notice with the VIA structures team to ascertain the damage and undertake an emergency repair to the brickwork parapet and replace the damaged crash barrier.

We undertook to recover/salvage as much of the existing brickwork as possible, then source a similar/matching reclaimed brick from a local reclamation supplier to make up the shortfall. We promptly employed a trusted bricklayer with the skills to undertake the works to the heritage structure. We commenced within one month of the initial contact.

The works were completed in a very short period of time Just 8 weeks from initial contact to handover and road re-opening.

D&W Small Works Team received a commendation from the client for our prompt action and quality of works undertaken, which has led to several other enquiries and job awards since this time.

Abbey Park Road Footbridge, Leicester

Danaher & Walsh, appointed by Leicester City Council through the Maintenance of Highway Structures term contract, undertook the design and construction of a new footbridge on Abbey Park Road in Leicester.

Project Overview

The new steel footbridge boasts a 50m span and 3.5m width, facilitating the passage of cyclists and pedestrians over the River Soar. Positioned parallel to the existing Abbey Corner Bridge, a 150-year-old Grade 2 listed structure too narrow to accommodate the necessary lanes of traffic along with cyclists and pedestrians safely, the steel superstructure adopts a Vierendeel truss design. The gently bowed deck profile helps alleviate the half-metre difference in level between each end of the bridge.

The superstructure, fabricated in four parts, was transported to the site individually and assembled atop the existing Abbey Corner Bridge. Subsequently, a mobile crane was employed to lift the superstructure into its designated position.

Simultaneously, Danaher & Walsh executed two distinct yet interconnected schemes on Abbey Park Road. One involved essential maintenance and repair works on Abbey Corner Bridge, while the other encompassed extensive highway and public realm enhancements along the length of Abbey Park Road. Together with the bridge projects, these efforts culminated in an improved environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users, all while maintaining smooth traffic flows. Additionally, the schemes contribute to a more welcoming approach to Abbey Park.
