Abbey Park Road Footbridge wins prestigious CECA award for D&W Civil Engineering

Abbey Park Road Footbridge in Leicester has been named Project of the Year (£0-1m) at the CECA Midlands Awards 2022.

The project involved the installation of a new footbridge over the River Soar on Abbey Park Road in Leicester.

In brief, the purpose of the project was to create a safe and convenient cycle and pedestrian route along Abbey Park Road. The existing Grade 2 Abbey Corner Bridge – which is being extensively refurbished under a separate contract, also by Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering – is too narrow to safely and comfortably accommodate vehicle traffic, cycles and pedestrians simultaneously.

By constructing this new bridge alongside the old bridge, the effective capacity is greatly increased, whist also creating a more pleasant route for cyclists and pedestrians.

In addition, D&W is carrying out major highway improvements to Abbey Park Road.

This project is notable for staff development. Site Engineer for the scheme was Claudia Carroll. Claudia joined Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering just two years ago as a Civil Engineering graduate from Loughborough University.

The award was presented at CECA Midlands’ Annual Awards & Dinner event, held at MacDonald Burlington Hotel in Birmingham.

The Civil Engineering Contractors Association is the representative body for companies who work day-to-day to deliver, upgrade, and maintain the country’s infrastructure.

With more than 300 members split across eight regions, CECA represents firms who together carry out an estimated 70-80 per cent of all civil engineering activity in the UK, in the key sectors of transport, energy, communications, waste and water.
