Abbey Park Road Footbridge Wins CECA Midlands Award

Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering is proud to announce that Abbey Park Road Footbridge in Leicester has won Project of the Year (£0-1m) at the CECA Midlands Awards 2022.

The award recognises the successful delivery of a new footbridge over the River Soar on Abbey Park Road. It also highlights the project’s role in improving safety, accessibility and movement for pedestrians and cyclists.

Creating a Safer Route in Leicester

The project involved the construction of a new pedestrian and cycle footbridge alongside Abbey Corner Bridge.

The existing Grade II listed Abbey Corner Bridge is too narrow to safely and comfortably accommodate vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians at the same time.

Therefore, the new footbridge provides a dedicated route for people walking and cycling along Abbey Park Road. As a result, the scheme has increased capacity and created a safer, more pleasant route for active travel users.

Supporting Wider Highway Improvements

The footbridge project forms part of wider improvement works on Abbey Park Road.

In addition to constructing the new bridge, Danaher & Walsh is also carrying out major highway improvements along the route.

The company is also refurbishing the existing Abbey Corner Bridge under a separate contract. Together, these works will improve safety, access and movement along this important route in Leicester.

Recognising Staff Development

The project also stands out for its focus on staff development.

Claudia Carroll worked as Site Engineer on the scheme. Claudia joined Danaher & Walsh Civil Engineering just two years earlier as a Civil Engineering graduate from Loughborough University.

Her role on the award-winning project reflects the company’s commitment to supporting early careers and developing future talent within civil engineering.

Celebrating CECA Midlands Success

The award was presented at the CECA Midlands Annual Awards and Dinner. The event took place at the MacDonald Burlington Hotel in Birmingham.

Winning Project of the Year is a significant achievement for the project team and everyone involved in delivering the scheme.
